Poker Advice, Poker Strategy & Poker Tips

Having a good poker strategy before joining a game is critical to your poker success & bankroll

1. When you have a bad  hand, "fold it!"

2. Don't pretend you are a great poker player like "Phil Hellmuth" unless you have the bankroll to back it up.

3. In limit games, Experts say you should start with at least 50 times the table limit.

4. Example: $2/$4 limit $200.oo for the session.

5. When you're holding an unbeatable hand "The Nuts"  Make sure the other players pay to see it. "Never show your poker hands for Free"

6. The first 2/5 cards you receive will be the foundation of your hand. Build your strategy around a solid foundation.

7. In a poker session you'll soon discover who the strong players are at the table. make mental notes of there play & in online play take notes "Keep Book"

8. As tempting as it may be, resist the temptation of trying to beat them at risk of losing sight of the other aspects of your game strategy

9. You'll lose big time if you're not lucky. If you're lucky enough to win, it'll hardly be worth the effort.

10. We're talking real poker, not video poker, so remember you're not trying to impress the change lady by getting the highest hand.

11. Your goal is to be holding a better hand than your opponents.

12. When everyone else is frightened off by your superior play, the pot and game is yours.

13. If you think for a second you can't beat the other hands, don't join them, fold and live to play another day.

14.  Don't let yourself "go on tilt" Be very patient, your time will come.

15. Play aggressive poker and establish a dominant image.

16. However, you should sometimes abandon your aggressive play, only when you're losing or hit a bad patch.

17. Other players unconsciously feel they can beat you. They then become inspired and play better. This little understood concept means that your normal value bets and raises will suddenly be unprofitable!

18. One of the great secrets to poker strategy is that you can play much more aggressively when your opponents are intimidated by you than when they're not.

19. Don't play in a game that is too tough, or too high for your bankroll  (Your opponents may be much better)

20. If you can't afford to lose, you can't play your best game.

21. Only play at a level or buy-in you are comfortable with.

22. Don't get married to a hand. "It could be a messy Divorce"

23. You must be able to throw your hand away when it is obvious it's beaten "no matter how good a hand you started with."

24. Example:  You are 11th in a big buy-in tournament, you are dealt pocket aces 'AA' in late position, early position raises all-in, and has double your chip stack, respect the play made by that aggressive player and take note, fold gracefully. Remember it is more profitable to make the final table, then to go out in 11th spot.

25.  "Keep Book" records of your play as well as your opponents.

26. Keeping Book will benefit you in current & future poker sessions.

27. Try to play poker when your happy, not when you are tired, sad, pissed off, bored, broke, etc.

28. If you can't be fun to play with, don't join the game!

29. Have a good poker strategy, a poker player should have a conscious or unconscious understanding of pot odds and personal expectations.

30. A bad poker strategy is to play too many hands.

31. Most players play way too many hands. "You will win more by folding more often."

32. As part of your poker strategy, try to use the concept of pot odds to guide your betting & bluffing.

33. The secret of winning money consistently is to find games with players who play worse than you do. "Law of the jungle rules at the poker table"

34. Only play the poker games you are familiar with.

35. Understand the difference between playing at the Casino and playing Online

36. At the Casino, you'll have to play more wisely against possibly more skilled competition. "Ware your Poker Face"

37. Playing online you can watch the game before you join, track your opponents play & betting patterns, "keep book" giving you a huge advantage.

38. If you're having a bad day at the Casino tables or online, take a break. In fact, take many breaks. "Keep yourself fresh"

39. You should always watch, study and "keep book." The best way to improve your game is to study great players and practice your skills in low stakes games.

40. Remember, You can't expect to win every session you play in. Realizing that is very important. Every session is part of your learning experience.

41. You should never be intimidated, if you are "get up and move" or leave altogether. Play steady, Play your "A Game" and have fun.

42. Texas Hold'em, you can bet with any ace or two over cards on the flop, but you should seriously consider folding if someone re-raises your bet.

43. If someone bets before you on the flop you can call with two over cards, or any ace, but check/fold them at the turn "unless your hand improves."

44. Texas Hold'em, You can call with two major over cards (A-J A-Q) if someone raises your bet on the flop. You can also check/call a bet on the turn with that kind of hand, unless the board looks threatening.

45. Texas Hold'em, a small pair with an over card kicker is a strong hand that you can (cold) call a raise with on the flop. Though, you should probably fold it on the next round if it was raised on the flop and you haven't improved the hand and someone bets before you.

46. Texas Hold'em, if everyone checks on the flop you can bet on the turn even if you have nothing. Your opponents will often fold in such a situation, unless they are too many or too loose.

47. Texas Hold'em, you can sometimes bluff/bet if the flop contains an ace. Your opponents will often fold in such situations if they don't have any pairs or an open ended straight, because it's impossible for them to have any over cards when the flop contains an ace.

48. Texas Hold'em, if someone suddenly bets into you or raise, and you are considering folding, be sure to first look at the amount of chips that the player has in front of him. If he is out of chips it's likely that he is bluff-raising/betting because he knows he will go all-in on that hand anyway.

49. Remember poker is a game that goes on within you. Control yourself and you will be a winner.

50. Pokers "Golden Rule" Don't try to beat the other players, let them try to beat you!

51. Be sure you know the rules of the game. The player who knows the rules has a huge advantage in any game against players who do not.

52. A player who knows the poker probabilities of drawing and improving hands has a decided edge over the player who thinks he knows.

53. Don't become a slave to poker probabilities. They are after all probabilities, not laws; and they do not supply you a sure thing  for winning.

54. "Keep book" Observe your opponents, learn their poker mannerisms, betting patterns, do they play to many hands, are they loose or tight players?

55. At all cost try to avoid giveaway mannerisms of your own. "mix up your play" and the amount you bet/or don't with certain hands.

56. Experience is the best teacher. Try to read a few poker books and watch a few games before getting involved.

57. In any poker game an average hand becomes less valuable the more players there are involved.

58. Treat every round of betting as if it were the first. Forget the previous betting rounds or bad beats and the money you have contributed to the pot.

59. When you hold "The Nuts" an unbeatable hand, If someone raises first then call him to the river and maximize your profit, wait till last round to re-raise.

60. If you have a bad hand "fold it at the start" rather than in the middle or at the end. Unless you are in the small blind/sb  or big blind/bb.

61. Call your opponent/opponents when you think your hand is good enough to win, not merely because you suspect an opponents bluff.

62. As a rule of thumb, don't try to steal a pot by bluffing a poor player, a big winner or a heavy loser.

63. When you're on a losing streak/bad run, don't let yourself go on tilt. The more reckless you feel, the wiser it is to get up & leave the table.

64. A player fighting to recoup losses or an excited player is a poker player at his worst. Avoid these habits at all cost. "for bankrolls sake"

65. Expect to lose a pot unless you believe you have the best hand going in.

66. Most draw poker players would win instead of lose if they never tried to outdraw the opener.

67. Bet your big hands and make every active player pay to see your hand.

68. Always vary your playing strategy. The player whose game is always the same becomes a target for smart poker players.

69. Try to keep a poker face. Don't complain when losing or show elation when winning.

70. The emotional aftermath will prohibit clear thinking and proper evaluation of succeeding hands.

71. Try to sit with your back to the wall and try to avoid players and railbirds who watch or try to peek at your hands.

72. Trust no one at poker, it is a game of war.

73. If you want to play your "A game" you must forget friendship, bet your hand for what it's worth.

74. When you are playing poker, give the game all you've got or get out.

75. In the poker room you never sit down to play on your own. Rather, you make your way to the desk behind which the room manager, supervisors, dealers, hostesses, and some chip runners are milling.

76. Benefit from reading the board of house rules presented in most card rooms and web sites. This can usually be found hanging on the wall or in the web sites links. It tells you everything you'll need to know to sit down and play, as well as any particulars that you might not find in other card rooms.

77. Where you sit in relation to your turn to bet has an impact on your results. Being forced to be an early bettor in a hand is much less advantageous than being able to bet later in the round.

78. Poker is a game of skill, but a lot of the skill involves being able to conceal your true feelings, while at the same time trying to assess the true feelings/tells of other players who are trying to do the same.

79. The flop is the nexus of the hand, limiting raises pre-flop goes far towards disguising your hand.

80. In early position you have to play fairly tight, even in loose games since you don't know how many raises there will be, and you will be out of position for the whole hand. "A BIG DISADVANTAGE"

81. Opening in tight games in any position or loose games in late position, your attention should be on getting heads up with a blind or outright stealing the blinds.

82. It is better to sacrifice your small blind or bet early, rather then bet, only to rope yourself into a betting war with a pro.

83. I can't emphasize enough on the importance of keeping a poker face while betting, and not giving any hints/clues about how good or bad your hand is.

84. The whole point of poker is to make sure that other players have NO clues, other than the bets you make. "mix it up"

85. When it comes to betting, alcohol and narcotics can be your worst enemy. While beer and cigars tend to go hand in hand with poker night, alcohol is not recommended if you're going to play in a casino, online or a home game, especially if the stakes are high.

86. One of the best pieces of advice I can give you about betting is to bet with your head, not over it.

87. The cold hard fact is very few people make their fortunes playing poker. A lot more lose theirs.

88. Never bring your entire bankroll with you to one gambling session.

89. You need to have a daily gambling budget. Start by dividing your bankroll by the number of days you'll be gambling.

90. Divide your daily bankroll into the number of sessions you will be expecting to play each day.

91. Don't bet tomorrow's money today, save it until tomorrow comes.

92. Set a goal of winning between Example: 50 to 100% of a single sessions bankroll.

93. Set aside your original bankroll plus half your winnings.

94. Play with the remainder of your winnings and continue to set aside additional winnings. "Increasing your bankroll"

95. Discipline is not only a significant part of being a successful poker player, but probably the most important element of money management

96. Set loss limits and win goals. For Example: When losing half your sessions bankroll "walk"

97.  When doubling your sessions bankroll, consider doing the same thing "Smile and leave"
